These pie irons are a nice, heavy cast iron and cook items like eggs very well in the hot coals from a fire. The only annoyance about this product is that you will need to melt the wax off the pie iron, which is on it when it ships to prevent rusting, and then season the cast iron part before you use it the first time. Otherwise it will flash rust, as happened to ours when we decided to use it immediately rather than leave it behind (it was a last minute purchase before a kayaking/camping trip). Just make sure you leave yourself time to season either at your campsite or on a grill at home before you go. It takes several rounds of greasing and then baking over coals to get a good seasoning, so it can take a while. Otherwise, great product. It’s just too bad that Rome stopped making their pie irons in the America. This one in made in China.

I love this pie iron. Had my first ones camping 50+ years ago as a kid. This brought back memories and next generation loved them. I seasoned with grape seed oil. Tip – cheapest sliced white bread and cherry pie filling has always been the favorite. After seasoning your iron and getting it hot in coals, butter one side (pie iron side) and place on each half (match tops/bottoms when closed), add 2-3 tablespoons of pie filling, place opposing bread slice over filling/bread slice, close pie iron. Heat on one side 12-15 seconds, flip pie iron and toast another 12-15 seconds. Open iron and look at one side/close iron – flip – check other side. Place side needing more toastiness back in red hot coals until golden brown. First mountain pie is usually a throw-away so use a little less pie filling. Enjoy!

Love this pie iron. Initially when I received it I thought it looked too small for a standard size slice of bread, however allowing for the indentation of the irons it became apparent that the size is more than adequate.
It took a while to season per the instructions – cast iron retains a lot of heat an took time to cool before applications of shortening but once done I had great fun experimenting with toasted treats and didn’t have problems with sticking. I tried egg and bacon toasted sandwiches, toasted cheese filled tortilla wrap, and finally apple pastries using store bough ready-rolled chilled croissant dough and tinned apples – all were super easy and were a winner with the family. With a hot fire from a small firebox stove I was turning the pastries and sandwiches around in about 5 minutes each. There are lots of recipe ideas on youtube.
Well pleased with this pie iron. It’s going to be a great addition to our camping kitchen and depending on how we get on in the field I may purchase a second one.

Bought these to make “mountain pies” in our fire pit. These bring back memories of camping as a kid.
PROs:
1) Materials and construction are very high quality. Looks like it will be making pies/sandwiches for us for a LONG time
2) Clip to hold the 2 pieces together during cooking works very well and allows you to “set and time” rather than have to place pressure constantly to keep the sides closed.
3) Heats nice and evenly.
4) Seals edges really nice. We like to put pie filling inside the bread and make pies. Can also use nutella or chocolate spread in it too.
5) Cleans easily as long as you use some cooking spray before you place the bread inside it.
Don’t have any CONs. Just keep them good and dry, else they may rust, but that’s with any iron product…

Pie Irons are so much fun. We use them for camping, fire pit, bbq, and sometimes on our gas stove. They are very versatile. We cook a lot of different things in them from grilled cheese sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, chicken, steak, cinnamon rolls, monkey bread, garlic bread, and so on.
The instructions say to season them before you use them. We seasoned ours in the bbq on the grill at 300-400 degrees for 15 min. We first wiped them down with vegetable oil. Pam, Crisco, vegetable oil, olive oil, will all work fine. After the recommended 15 min, we repeated the process. The more times you do this the better non-stick surface you will create.
Tip: Wipe down between each use; it makes it easier to clean. Do not use soap to clean since it is cast iron. Soap will strip the seasoning away. Use a good scrub brush like a chain mail scrubber, then wipe down with towel when dry. Don’t let them air dry. Water on cast iron equals rust. Also, wipe down with more oil after you have cleaned and are ready to put away. This also helps prevent rust. We do this on all our cast iron pans after each use.
Recipe ideas:
Carnea-sada. Use skirt steak, or whatever steak you choose to use and marinate with a Carnea-sada seasoning. Cook in pie-iron and serve with fixings same as you would for tacos.
Monkey Bread: Get a can of biscuits. 1/4 the biscuits dough. Put brown sugar, regular sugar, and cinnamon in Ziploc bag. Place cut up dough in bag and shake. Place dough in pie iron and cook until golden brown and dough is done. One of our favorites the kids love.
Grilled cheese sandwich: Make your favorite grilled cheeses any way you want and cook in pie-iron. For really good one try Pesto, Avocado, Havarti and Turkey. Picture below is of ham and cheese. Really easy to cook in pie iron and tastes awesome.
Update: 5/18 Almost two years later and they work just like the day we got them. Definitely recommend.

I love this thing. We made pizza, sandwiches and pies. We did season it per inctructions prior to use and oiled with vegetable oil after each use. Never had any food stick. I was able to heat and wipe clean after cooking. It is too heavy for a child to hold over fire/coals. I layed it on a grate or rock and just turned periodically. The versatility on what u can cook in here is endless. I’m sire u could make eggs and omletes as well is you season it. I didnt get a chance to try it. The only tjing I wish is that I had bought 5 so that I could cook everyones food at once because depending on what ur cookking it takes 5-9 minutes. It has wood handles that do not get hot. Where the box joins the pole does feel as if it could break if held out for long periods but it didnt break and we used it for three days for 5 people. Cast iron material seems like good quality but it has to be cleaned and seasoned oer instructions. It comes with a coating of wax on it that must be removed before seasoning and using but was easy to do and I did at home before we left

My family has used this about a dozen times. The shaft is a little weak, so make sure you are not hanging the iron over a fire. It needs to be set on something over the fire. It heats up nicely and cooks our food perfectly.

Great to use on stove top or bbq. Awesome taste and much easier to clean than electric jaffle toasters!!!

Arrived packaged very well with detailed instruction. I can tell it was made with care. I researched the snot out of these cookers on Amazon (and elsewhere), read tons of reviews and ultimately landed on this one. Very glad I did. We followed the seasoning instructions and started cooking over a camp fire. Worked perfectly every time. We already had a different pie cooker (as do our friends) but this one is defiantly our favourite…the quality, size and shape of the iron part is perfect for any loaf of store bought white bread. The handles are quality and comfortable to use. If I ever need to order another one I will get this one again.
